Look at the picture of a crock. Notice the thick rim around the top, this is its lip. This is used to hold the cream, which is white, before it is churned. Sometimes objects are given the power to do things that only people can do or they are described in a way that reminds you of a person. This is called personification and is used to make an object seem more powerful or to make the image more vivid and striking.
		How has Seamus Heaney used personification in his description of the crocks? Think carefully about how the crock is made to seem like a person. Be sure to look at small parts of the quotation.
